3GWh in Sight! Sungrow Accelerates Energy Storage Expansion in Europe
June 12, 2026 – According to international media reports, the Nova Zagora Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bulgaria, jointly delivered by Sungrow and international EPC and integrator Sunotec, has officially commenced commercial operation.
The project features a capacity of 150MW/600MWh and was developed, financed, and will be operated by Enery, one of the leading independent power producers (IPPs) in Central and Eastern Europe.
The entire facility is equipped with Sungrow's PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage system, while project funding was provided through the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy's RESTORE national program.
Notably, the Nova Zagora project is among the first large-scale standalone utility-scale energy storage plants in Bulgaria to fully comply with the country's grid code requirements.
Bulgaria Energy Storage Pipeline to Reach 3GWh by End-2026
The Nova Zagora project represents one of several energy storage projects being developed by Sungrow and Sunotec in Bulgaria.
According to the partners' roadmap, an additional 2.2GWh of energy storage projects are scheduled to enter operation within the next two months. By the end of 2026, the total deployed energy storage capacity under their collaboration in Bulgaria is expected to reach 3GWh.
The two companies are also advancing the Phase I Knizhnovik Solar-plus-Storage Project (100MW/200MWh), which is likewise being developed by Enery.
The growing project pipeline further strengthens Sungrow's position in the European energy storage market while supporting Bulgaria's transition toward a more flexible and resilient power system.
