3.5GWh Supplied by BYD: Largest Energy Storage Project in the Americas Commissioned
On June 9, Grenergy officially announced the commissioning of the Elena project on June 8, marking the launch of the largest energy storage project currently operating in the Americas.
The project has entered operation with an initial storage capacity of 3.5GWh and is planned to expand to 7GWh in a future phase. The inauguration ceremony was jointly attended by Grenergy CEO David Ruiz de Andrés and Chilean President José Antonio Kast Rist.
The Elena solar-plus-storage plant is a key component of the Oasis de Atacama project, featuring 446MW of solar PV capacity and 3.5GWh of battery energy storage. BYD Energy Storage supplied the project's complete 3.5GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), comprising 624 MC Cube-T BESS units.
Publicly available information shows that the total scale of cooperation between BYD Energy Storage and Grenergy has now reached 9.1GWh.
In May 2025, BYD Energy Storage secured an agreement to supply a 3.5GWh BESS for Phase 6 of Grenergy's Oasis de Atacama project in northern Chile, corresponding to the Elena solar-plus-storage plant that has now entered operation. The facility combines 446MW of solar generation capacity with 3.5GWh of energy storage.
BYD Energy Storage also stated that it had previously supplied 3GWh of energy storage systems for the first three phases of the Oasis de Atacama project, bringing the cumulative cooperation volume between the two companies to 6.5GWh.
In March 2026, BYD Energy Storage and Grenergy further expanded their partnership with a new 2.6GWh energy storage agreement. Under the contract, BYD will provide 468 MC Cube-T battery energy storage systems for the Central Oasis solar-plus-storage project in central Chile.
