According to Arab News on September 13, Egyptian battery maker BME and China’s CATL will invest more than EGP 2 billion (about US$39 million) to build a battery manufacturing plant in Egypt.

Egypt is committed to developing its electric vehicle industry and expanding local manufacturing. According to an Egyptian government statement, the plant will have an initial annual capacity of 1GWh, focused primarily on batteries for heavy commercial vehicles. In the second phase, production will expand to passenger car batteries and wind-solar energy storage systems, bringing total capacity to 5GWh.

According to public information, BME was jointly established by Egyptian commercial vehicle manufacturer MCV and Auto D for Industry, Trade and Supplies. The partnership will combine BME’s manufacturing and engineering capabilities in Egypt with CATL’s battery technology, production equipment, and technical support.

The project targets a 40% localization rate. Locally produced batteries are expected to supply Egyptian vehicle manufacturers, reducing reliance on imports and saving transportation and logistics costs. Producing batteries closer to vehicle assembly plants will also allow manufacturers to integrate battery systems more closely with production lines and respond faster to changes in market demand.

According to the Egyptian Presidency, Egypt’s National Industrial Strategy 2026–2030 lists automobile manufacturing, electrical and engineering industries, and electronics among seven priority sectors, and aims for US$100 billion in non-oil exports by 2030.

Egypt is also expanding renewable energy generation and battery storage. The government plans to raise the share of renewable energy in power generation to 45% by 2028, and increase grid-connected energy storage capacity to about 1.1GWh through new battery storage projects.
